THE WAY OF THE CROSS
(Mark 8:31-38)
Peter didn’t think
the future Jesus outlined
was the way to go.
Faithful following
in the resurrection light
became their hard road.
Somewhere on that road
hardship gave way to triumph
under empire’s sway.
Following Jesus
is a movement we have made
an institution.
Somehow we must lose
that empire weight for the way
Jesus had in mind.
