THE VINEYARD, THE LAND
(Matthew 21:33-46)
A vineyard and fence,
productive land, a wine press;
what more could one want?
The tenant farmers
wanting more, killing for it,
met a grisly end.
Outsiders among
a thousand generations,
we mistake our place.
A people disdained,
hunted, herded, dispossessed:
the first are made last.
Sacred gorge destroyed,
death of language, culture, place:
the first are still last.
Wanting all there is,
our people are devouring
even life itself.
