SERVANT
(Isaiah 42:1-9)
Oracle of hope
in the midst of hopelessness:
exiled Israel.
Anointed servant,
God’s chosen, to establish
the true way on earth.
Ancient imag’ry
later appropriated
to describe Jesus.
In a holy land
occupied, oppressed by Rome
these were words of hope
Can these again be
hope-filled words enlightening
our perplexing times?
