Sunday 12 - Year B

GATHERING OF THE PEOPLE (From Psalm 9:9-11)
The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed,
a refuge for times of trouble.
And those who know your name shall trust you,
for you, O LORD, have not abandoned those who turn to you.
Sing praises to the LORD, Enthroned of Zion;
and declare his deeds among the peoples!

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE (From Psalm 9:13-14,18-19)
Be gracious, O LORD,
and look upon your church throughout the world,
guiding its search for the unity
for which Jesus prayed.
Guide the Uniting Church in Australia
through the storms which seem to engulf it.
Rise up, O Lord,
and hear our prayer.

Be gracious, O LORD,
and look upon the distress of those
who are persecuted for their faith;
those whose path ahead seems dim;
those who are victims of oppressive relationships.
Look upon the needy,
that they may know the warmth of your faithfulness,
that their hope may not be snuffed out
like a fitful candle flame
Rise up, O Lord,
and hear our prayer.

Be gracious, O LORD,
and look upon those whom we name today
and those named in our hearts,
that in their darkness of their circumstance,
they may feel the gentle light of your presence.
Rise up, O Lord,
and hear our prayer.

Lord God,
let your glory appear among us
and make us sharers of your eternity,
with all your saints,
through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

A CREATIVE MOMENT - Mark 4:35-41
(a) Have the lection read with sound effects (e.g. wind, crashing waves, creaking timbers, shouting voices). Have a “dead calm” of 10-15 seconds after v.39 and again after v.41.

(b) Hang a small sail from a dinghy on one wall of the church, and/or perhaps a fishing net. Some less ambitious boating equipment, and a cushion or two could be arranged in an appropriate and visible place in the church. Remind the congregation of the relationship between the church and a boat. Mention that the body of the church is the nave, from the Latin word for ship. Many baptism fonts depict this scene, carved in the stone or timber of the font surrounds.
