PENTECOST
(Genesis 11:1-9 and Acts 2:1-21)
Pentecost is not
a bookend ‘pair’ to Babel,
it stands on its own.
Babel’s point is speech
Pentecost’s point is hearing:
‘same’ against ‘diverse’.
We prefer sameness;
God desires diversity
in place and people.
Perhaps that is why
Luke’s symbolic account holds
such diverse hearers.
From earliest times
‘Breath of life’ present for all
not just the church.
