PSALM 122
I rejoiced with those who said to me,
“Let us go to the house of the LORD!”
My feet were standing within the gates of Jerusalem;
Jerusalem – built as a city compact and secure.
There the tribes of the LORD go up
as decreed for Israel,
to give thanks to the name of the LORD.
For there the thrones for judgement were set up
the thrones of the house of David.
Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
“May they prosper who love you.
Peace be within your walls,
and security within your towers.”
For the sake of my relatives and friends
I say, “Peace be within you.”
For the sake of the house of the LORD our God,
I will seek your good.

For the First Sunday in Advent – Year A
God of the unexpected moment,
bringing form out of chaos;
separating light from the dark;
breathing life into your human creation;
enliven our hearts,
fill us with your expectant Spirit.
Break in on our world
like a flood, like a thief.
Separate the day of the age to come
from the night of our human darkness:
come in your unexpected hour.

OFFERING
Holy and mysterious God,
whose ways we would learn
and in whose paths we would walk,
wake us from the sleep of daily routine;
rouse us by your Spirit of life
to living and giving
for the unexpected hour
of another’s need.
In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
(A prayer to gather the spoken and silent concerns/joys/thanks expressed by the congregation and lead into a more structured Intercession with connection to the lections for the day. Sometimes this prayer borrows lightly from other sources e.g. Uniting in Worship 2 or publications of the Iona Community.)

Holy and mysterious spirit of grace
be present to those
whose troubles are known only to you,
those whom we name
on our lips and in our silence…
Strengthen us also
that in our following the way of Jesus
we may be your presence to others.
