Psalm 124 (a translation for today – a prayer of confession)
If it had not been for the LORD – let Israel assert –
If it had not been for the LORD,
who was on our side when others rose up against us,
then they would have swallowed us alive:
their anger was like a raging bushfire.
They would have swept us away,
like floodwaters sweeping over our necks,
and like an avalanche, a frozen flood, swallowed our lives.
Blessed is the LORD
who did not give us as prey to their teeth.
Our lives have escaped like a bird from the fowler’s net;
the trap is broken and we have escaped.
Our help is in the name of the LORD
who made heaven and earth.

A CREATIVE MOMENT – Exodus 1:8-2:10 and Matthew 16:13-20
Let your imagination lead you in providing a setting for worship which takes the birth of Moses as its theme. How might you represent baby, basket and river reeds?
For worship focussed on the gospel reading reclaim the papier mache boulder on which Jacob rested his head. Signs bearing the words “Elijah”, “John the Baptist” and “prophet” – each crossed out – and a sign bearing the word “Messiah” would also help to set the scene.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
(A prayer, usually with connection to one or more of the lections for the day, to gather the spoken and silent concerns/joys/thanks expressed by the congregation and lead into a more structured Intercession. Sometimes this prayer also borrows lightly from other sources e.g. Uniting in Worship 2 or publications of the Iona Community.)

God of all grace,
even as you are present with us
be with those who feel overwhelmed;
about to be swallowed up …
swept away in a great torrent …
Be with those we have named on our lips and in our silence…
and by your Word and your Spirit
help us bring consolation to those know to us,
return to our memory those whom we have forgotten
and be present to those who have no-one …
