PSALM 62:5-12 (A version for today)
Wait calmly for God alone, my soul;
for my hope is from the LORD.
Only God is my safe place;
my strong place from which I cannot be shaken.
My welfare and worth depend on God, my strong rock;
my refuge is in God.
Ever trust in God, O people,
pour out your hearts before the LORD;
God is our refuge!
(silence)
Greatest or least, each person is but a breath, an illusion;
on the scales, in all, they are still less than a puff of wind.
Don’t trust in extortion or robbery; don’t idolise wealth;
even if it increases, don’t set your heart on it.
(silence)
One thing God has spoken; twice I have heard this
— that strength belongs to God;
and steadfast love is yours also, O Lord,
for you reward each according to their deeds.

CALL TO WORSHIP (Psalm 62:5-8)
Wait calmly for God alone, my soul;
for my hope is from the LORD.
Only God is my safe place;
my strong place from which I cannot be shaken.
My welfare and worth depend on God, my strong rock;
my refuge is in God.
Ever trust in God, O people,
pour out your joys and your sorrows before the LORD;
God is our refuge!

SENDING OUT (Psalm 62:9-12)
One thing God has spoken; twice I have heard this
— that strength belongs to God;
and steadfast love is yours also, O God.

The steadfast love of Source of life, embrace you;
the grace of the Word of life rest on you;
and the presence of the Breath of life surprise and encourage you
this day and all your days.
Amen.

OFFERING
Holy mystery we name God,
we bring these gifts,
and our very beings.
`All we have, and are, comes from you
alone.

Grant us
wisdom to use
these gifts and our living,
following the way of Jesus,
the one
who revealed your love most clearly.
Amen

For use in worship, with acknowledgement. Jeff Shrowder 1999.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
(A prayer to gather the spoken and silent concerns/joys/thanks expressed by the congregation and lead into a more structured Intercession with connection to the lections for the day. Sometimes this prayer will borrow lightly from other sources e.g. Uniting in Worship 2 or publications of the Iona Community.)

Compassionate and including God, who knows our inmost being,
By your Word and your Spirit you sustain those who live at the edges
Comfort and encourage those whom we name on our lips
and in the silence of our hearts,
and those whose troubles are known only to you …
(The Prayers of the People continue)

A CREATIVE MOMENT – Jonah 3
Materials/Preparation:
Have the whole of chapter 3 read (it loses so much by being cut up as per the lectionary) at a point in the service before the Prayer of Confession (which could properly come after the sermon, as part of the response to the word). I’d love to see everything and everyone wrapped in sackcloth for this but I guess there are practical considerations . . . However, with some advance notice and preparation it might be possible to have everyone cover their heads with a large piece of plain material (e.g. calico) for the prayer of confession (to be removed after the declaration of forgiveness).
