THE GATHERING OF THE PEOPLE (From Psalm 48)
Great is the LORD and greatly to be praised.
Your name, O God, like your praise,
reaches to the ends of the earth
PSALM 48 (a fresh translation)
The LORD is great, worthy of the greatest praise.
Zion, holy mountain, a beautiful view,
and the joy of all the earth;
Zion, surrounded by the city of our God;
the city of the great King.
And we know that God is here, in its citadels;
our God, strong and enduring.
Here is the evidence:
kings assembled, having crossed over together.
When they saw it, they were overwhelmed;
they were terrified, and they fled.
Trembling seized them,
writhing like that of a woman in labour,
like the east wind shattering the ships of Tarshish.
As we have heard,
so have we seen in the city of the LORD of hosts,
in the city of our God,
which God establishes forever.
We have reflected on your lovingkindness, O God,
in the midst of your temple.
As is your name, O God, so is your praise
to the ends of the earth.
Your right hand is full of justice.
Mount Zion shall rejoice,
the daughters of Judah shall rejoice
because of your judgments.
Walk right around Zion;
go all around it, count its towers.
contemplate its ramparts,
climb over its fortifications,
so that you may describe it to the next generation
For here is God,
our God, forever and ever,
who will lead us forever.
OFFERING
Creating and eternal God,
whose grace is sufficient for us
and whose power is made perfect in weakness,
in our weakness and insufficiency,
we offer our lives
and the gifts of our living
for the work of your mustard seed kingdom;
in Jesus’ name. Amen.
A CREATIVE MOMENT – Mark 6:1-13
(a) Have some (preferably largish) maps and travel posters “blue-tacked” around the walls;
(b) project similar images on an overhead screen during a prayer of confession which includes ackowledgement our reluctance to risk the journey in faith;
(c) IMAGINE THE JOURNEY OF YOUR CHURCH – have members of the congregation, in small groups, select SIX items from the following list (adapt as appropriate for your circumstance) being the items essential for the continued, growing life of the church on its journey.
The Church Morning Tea Heating/Cooling Resource Library Pulpit Choir Elders Presbytery Rosters |
The wooden Cross The lectern Bible Bible studies Fellowship meals Clergy People Regulations Tennis Club |
Pews Hymn Books Uniting in Worship Notice Board Parish Magazine Drop-in Centre Car Park Trading Table |
Property Committee Finance Committee Church Hall Organ Pew-sheet/Bulletin Kitchen Building Fair Worship |
What might you do with the results of this survey?
How might it influence your congregation’s ministry and mission focus?
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
(A prayer to gather the spoken and silent concerns/joys/thanks expressed by the congregation and lead into a more structured Intercession with connection to the lections for the day. Sometimes this prayer borrows lightly from other sources e.g. Uniting in Worship 2 or publications of the Iona Community.)
By your Holy Spirit, O God,
warm the lives of those we have named
on our lips and in the silence of our hearts;
sustain those beset by doubt and unbelief;
celebrate with those open to your abundance;
bring comfort to those among us and around us
who are hurting,
and encouragement to those
for whom the light of life
shines less brightly.
In Jesus’ name we pray….
