PSALM 91:1-6, 9-16 (Jeff’s Version for Today)
Whoever dwells under the protection of the Most High,
lives in the shadow of the Almighty,
“O LORD, you are my refuge and my stronghold;
my God in whom I trust.”
Indeed, the LORD will deliver you from the traps of others,
and from the threat of destruction.
With his wing he will cover you,
and under his wing you may take refuge;
God’s faithfulness is a shield and protection.
Do not fear the terror of the night
or the words and actions that wound by day;
the painfulness that stalks in darkness
or the wrong that overwhelms in broad daylight.
Truly, any person who loves me I will bring to safety,
and anyone who knows my name I will keep out of harm’s way,
and anyone who will call on me I will answer,
and be with in distress,
and rescue,
and bring honour,
and satisfy with long life,
and show my saving work.
INTERCESSION (From Psalm 91)
Close yet cosmic mystery
we name God,
gather and comfort the oppressed and grieving
strengthen those who fear the terror of the night,
or daily life;
rescue the distressed;
keep safe those who love you.
be present to those who call on your name,
to those we have named today,
and those we name in our hearts.
Show them your saving ways
to your honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen
OFFERING
Generous God,
we bring our diverse gifts.
Let the light of Jesus
light the path of our following.
Let the Spirit of Jesus
enliven our serving. Amen.
A CREATIVE MOMENT – Jeremiah 32:1-3a, 6-15
In a dark and hopeless time for Israel, Jeremiah expresses his vision of God’s faithfulness in the purchase of land. Accompanied by an appropriate litany the group/congregation could plant a tree/shrub as an expression of your vision of God’s faithfulness. (When Martin Luther was asked what he would do if he was told the world would end tomorrow, he replied, “I’d plant a tree”.) If this is not possible/appropriate for your situation then perhaps you could have some property deeds or similar ‘instruments’ gathered/displayed on a table in the worship space. Pictures or posters of farmland and/or vineyards being worked could also be displayed around the worship space.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
(A prayer to gather the spoken and silent concerns/joys/thanks expressed by the congregation and lead into a more structured Intercession with connection to the lections for the day. Sometimes this prayer borrows lightly from other sources e.g. Uniting in Worship 2 or publications of the Iona Community.)
Most High God,
whose faithfulness is a shield and protection:
gather the oppressed and grieving under your wing
strengthen those who fear the terror of the night,
or daily life;
be present to those who call on your name;
to those we have named on our lips,
and in the silence of our hearts;
for the sake of your honour and glory…
