PSALM 132:1-12
O Lord, remember your faithful with kindness;
enduring hardships of all sorts for your sake.
Vowing to establish a place to your glory;
and a house for your worship.
We heard it was in [your town];
we came upon it in the [your locality].
Let us enter the LORD’s holy place,
and humbly come before our God.
Come, Lord God, and fill this place,
with your loyal-love, and your everlasting covenant!
Your priests are clothed in your triumph;
and your saints sing for joy.
For the sake of those who serve you do not turn from your anointed one.
to whom you swore a firm oath, one which you will not withdraw:
“I will set one of your descendants upon your throne.
If your sons keep my covenant and my terms that I teach them,
then their sons too, for all time, shall sit upon your throne.”
OFFERING
Generous God,
in our giving and our living
we respond to your blessings freely given.
By your Spirit enable us
to hear those who cry out for mercy,
to be satisfied with bread;
and serve them
in the way of Jesus,
in whose name we pray. Amen
A CREATIVE MOMENT
(a) 2 Samuel 23:1-7
In these last weeks of the church year the readings from the Hebrew Scriptures are concerned with women (Naomi and Hannah) who have no future in that they have no children. Each deals with that situation in a different way. Children are born; Obed thegrandfather of David, and Samuel who annoints David king. Today is Reign of Christ Sunday, also known as Christ the King Sunday. Invite the congregation to conclude the mural begun three weeks ago, by depicting aspects of today’s reading, the last words of David, in which he mentions the everlasting covenant made with him by God.
(b) John 18:33-37
There are several parallels and contrasts in the imagery of the Samuel readings and the gospel: raising up and bringing low, birth and birthpangs. Invite the congregation to add their images to the mural which has set the scene for our consideration of Advent and our anticipation of the One who has come, who comes, and is to come.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
(A prayer to gather the spoken and silent concerns/joys/thanks expressed by the congregation and lead into a more structured Intercession with connection to the lections for the day. Sometimes this prayer borrows lightly from other sources e.g. Uniting in Worship 2 or publications of the Iona Community.)
Lord of Life…
Creator of all…
Comfort of all sorrows…
attend our prayers…
and by your Holy Spirit
draw near to those we have named on our lips
and in our silence
and those whose trouble is known only to you;
that all may know your peace
like the sun rising on a cloudless morning;
in Jesus’ name we pray…
(The Prayers of the People continue)
