PSALM 82
God stands in the divine assembly;
and delivers judgement in the midst of the gods:
“How long will you judge unjustly,
favouring the wicked?
Get justice for the helpless and the orphan,
uphold the rights of the poor;
rescue the poor and the needy,
save them from the hand of those who care little for justice.
They do not know and they do not understand –
they wander about in darkness;
meanwhile all the foundations of the earth tremble.
You are gods,
members of the community of the Most High, all of you.
Even so, you will die like humankind,
and fall like any chief.
So, get up, and give justice to the earth,
for you have an hereditary responsibility to all the nations.
WE GATHER TO WORSHIP GOD (From Psalm 82:3-5)
Let us worship God
who acts as judge for the helpless and the orphan;
who upholds the rights of the poor;
who rescues the poor and the needy;
who saves them from the hand of those who care little for justice.
who lights up the darkness in which we stumble.
Most High, we gather to celebrate your greatness,
joining with the all creation
to sing your praises and offer you worship.
For you are worthy of adoration from every mouth,
and every tongue should praise you.
You created the earth by you power;
and save humanity by your mercy.
You make all things new by your grace.
Source of life,
Word of life
and Breath of life,
we offer our grateful praise. AMEN
OFFERING
Holy mystery we name God,
we bring the bustle of each day,
the energy created by our work,
the enthusiasm of our eager hearts.
May our joy in following Jesus strengthen us
that our living may also extend
your hospitality and compassion
to our neighbours. Amen.
A CREATIVE MOMENT – Luke 10:25-37
The theme of discipleship continues.
Build on the use of the ‘path’ from last week. Add ‘Jericho’ to the ‘Jerusalem’ signpost, pointing in the opposite direction. Bandages and a flask of oil and/or wine could be placed on the worship table.
Retain last week’s ‘shalom’ and ‘peace’ posters. Shalom is about right relationship with God and neighbour, through love. Discipleship is about following Jesus in that way.
THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
(A prayer to gather the spoken and silent concerns/joys/thanks expressed by the congregation and lead into a more structured Intercession with connection to the lections for the day. Sometimes this prayer borrows lightly from other sources e.g. Uniting in Worship 2 or publications of the Iona Community.)
God of boundless love,
You have heard the cry of your people in every generation;
Hear our prayer
for those in our congregation; our community; our families,
whom we name on our lips
and in the silence of our hearts:
those whose troubles are known only to you;
and those who have no-one …
In Jesus’ name we pray….
