1 SAMUEL 2:1-10
My very being praises the LORD;
my sense of triumph come through my God.
I’m able to laugh at my enemies, because I can rejoice in my situation.
“There isn’t a Holy One like the LORD;
indeed, there is no one besides you, no Rock like our God.
Talk no more with high pride, or arrogance;
for the LORD is a God of knowledge, who weighs every action.
The power of the mighty is shattered,
but the feeble gather strength.
The well-heeled have fallen on hard times,
but the hungry are have more than enough.
The barren give birth,
but the fertile no longer bear children.
The LORD kills and brings to life;
bringing down to Sheol and raising up.
The LORD makes poor and makes rich;
bringing low, and lifting up.
The LORD raises up the poor from the dust;
lifting the needy from the garbage tip,
making them sit with princes,
inheriting a seat of honor.
For the pillars of the earth are the LORD’s,
who set the world upon them.
“The LORD God will guard the feet of the faithful,
but will cut off the wicked in darkness;
for no one prevails by might.
The LORD! The LORD’s adversaries shall be shattered;
the Most High will thunder in heaven.
The LORD will judge the ends of the earth;
the LORD will strengthen the king,
and greatly empower the LORD’s anointed.”

OFFERING
Gracious and generous God,
in full assurance of faith
we offer these gifts and our lives
in response to the blessings we receive.
Empower us with your Spirit
to hear those who cry out for mercy
that we may be loving and committed bearers of the gospel
in word and in deed.
In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

A CREATIVE MOMENT
(a) Samuel 1:14-20

In these last weeks of the church year the readings from the Hebrew Scriptures are concerned with women (Naomi and Hannah) who have no future in that they have no children. Each deals with that situation in a different way. Children are born; Obed thegrandfather of David, and Samuel who annoints David king. Invite the congregation to continue the mural begun two weeks ago depicting aspects of these narratives which culminate next week (Reign of Christ Sunday; Christ the King) with the last words of David, in which he mentions the everlasting covenant made with him by God. Today, the childless Hannah is rewarded for her faithfulness.

(b) Mark 13:1-8
There are some interesting parallels and contrasts in the imagery of the Samuel readings and the gospel: raising up and bringing low, birth and birthpangs. Invite the congregation to add their images to the mural.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
(A prayer to gather the spoken and silent concerns/joys/thanks expressed by the congregation and lead into a more structured Intercession with connection to the lections for the day. Sometimes this prayer borrows lightly from other sources e.g. Uniting in Worship 2 or publications of the Iona Community.)

God of comfort,
by the light of your Word and the warmth of your Spirit
bring courage and hope
to those whom we have named today,
to those whom we name in our silence
and to those who cry to you
in their anxiety and vexation
that they may know your peace.
In Jesus’ name we pray…
      (The Prayers of the People continue)
