LUKE 1:68-79 (A Canticle)
We bless you LORD God:
you have smiled on your people and saved them;
you raised up a saviour from the house of David your servant,
just as you promised through the prophets long ago,
saving us from our enemies and those who would do us in.
You have shown the mercy you promised to our ancestors in the faith
remembering your holy covenant, sworn to Abraham;
to free us from our enemies to serve you,
upright and without fear, all our days.
A child is born to be called the prophet of the Most High;
who is going before you to prepare your ways;
to teach of the salvation to your people by the forgiveness of their sins.
By your tender mercy, O God,
your dawn from on high has broken in upon our lives,
lighting up the darkness, and the shadow of death, in which we sit,
and guiding our feet into your way of peace.

IN YOUR PROMISE WE JOURNEY
Eternal Lord God,
patient beyond human understanding,
that all might be reconciled to you
rather than perish;
all thanks and praise to you,
our Creator, Sustainer, Redeemer.
In your promise we journey,
seeking the reconciliation which you offer now
and the restoration assured
in your dwelling place of justice.
We praise you for your comfort in the wilderness
and your sustaining presence in our adversity;
Your Holy Spirit dwells among us lest we fall asleep;
and keeps us alert,
waiting for that moment of your revelation.
You open our hearts to your reconciling peace,
and empower us to walk in a right relationship
with you, O Lord;
Father, Son and Holy Spirit
to whom be all honour and glory
and praise and thanksgiving.

OFFERING
By your tender mercy O God,
the dawn from on high breaks upon us,
to give light to those who sit in darkness
and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the way of peace.
Receive our giving
and our living the way of Jesus,
and let all our service give you glory and praise,
through the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

A CREATIVE MOMENT
lectionary/ideas-for-advent-and-christmas for some ideas for worship in Advent and Christmas gleaned from the pages of “On the Move” (now out of print), originally published by the Joint Board of Christian Education, Melbourne, Australia.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
(A prayer to gather the spoken and silent concerns/joys/thanks expressed by the congregation and lead into a more structured Intercession with connection to the lections for the day. Sometimes this prayer borrows lightly from other sources e.g. Uniting in Worship 2 or publications of the Iona Community.)
Blessed are you, O Lord our God.
Be a sustaining presence
to those whose path in life
seems a mountain to be climbed,
a rough way with many sharp bends…
Be a light
to those we name aloud
and in silence…
Be a blessing
to those who love and care for them…
Be a wellspring in the desert
to those whose troubles are known only to you.
In Jesus’ name we pray….
