28th July 2019 – Sunday 17C (COCU 49C)

(Luke 11:1-13)
Who is that, knocking, knocking,
disturbing my peace?

First Nations people.
You called our land empty, void,
and made it your own.

Sixty thousand years,
law, way, sacred link to land,
seeking to be heard.

Truth, treaty, and voice:
we want to end the torment
of powerlessness.
         Jeff Shrowder, 2019
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people gathered at the 2017 National Constitutional Convention at Uluru and made a statement from the heart. (Geographically, Uluru also approximates the heart of our land.)
These verses draw on that statement.
