23 April 2023 – Easter 3A (33A)

Given the First Reading during the Easter season is not from the First Testament I am exploring the psalm (traditionally chosen as a response to the First Reading) set for this Sunday.

WHEN BAD THINGS HAPPEN
(Psalm 116:1-4)
Anguish, pain, distress,
the psalmist’s appeals are heard:
thanksgiving, praise, vows.

When bad things happen
and ‘good’ people are ‘rescued’,
“God has rescued me”.

When bad things happen
and yet there is no ‘rescue’
what then can we say?

The Other, who weeps,
suffers with us, grieves with us,
also gives us hope.
